The more I read historicals, though, the more I realize that what feels genuine to us (beyond the facts like technology) tends to be a personal thing. Bernard Cornwell's Saxons, for example, are all very macho, whereas when I read their literature I come away with the impression of more of a thoughtful melancholy people. I can only assume that we both see something of ourselves reflected back.
