FIC: The Royal Sanctuary: The inscriptions (Tempestuous Tours)

On the walls of the sanctuary are inscribed the names of the Living Dead, which were taken from them at the time of their enslavement. These names were thankfully recorded by the priests who removed the names, so we still possess records of the thousands of men and women who were enslaved in this palace and usually died here shortly thereafter.

Not all of the names of the Living Dead are inscribed here. At the time of the rededication of this sanctuary, the Jackal met with the former Living Dead and their families to determine whether their names should be inscribed here, along with the names of the Living Dead from earlier generations. So strong a stigma continues in Koretia against being enslaved that the present generation of the former Living Dead - or their family members, where the former slaves could not speak for themselves - asked that their names not be inscribed here until after their bodies were dead. Their wishes were respected.

[Translator's note: The intersection between family and slavery can be seen in Light and Love.]

Sanders' Union Fourth Reader

Sanders' Union Fourth Reader by Charles Walton Sanders

Despite the titles, this is more recent than his New Fourth Reader. It repeats three or four readings from the earlier works, not all of them from the fourth reader.

Interesting nowadays chiefly for the views of edifying works and science of the time.

Internet

The Starlink setup has arrived (that was fast) and not a moment too soon.  Last night I could not watch anything on streaming.  About every 30 seconds or so my service would stall.  I've called the roofer for help getting a roof jack mounted, so hopefully Starlink will be functional soon.
Why yes, I am making several changes that will materially improve quality of life.  Stove, water pump, internet...

I stopped posting this series because if what I perceived as lack of interest. I need to get it in my head that lack of comments on my posts doesn’t necessarily that nobody is reading them.

Any way, Katar suspects Shayera has been set up.

Wednesday reading

Finished since the last reading post
Riders, which was reasonably entertaining but contained a number of really unpleasant characters behaving badly. That made the whole experience feel like hard work, and with its thickness just holding it up for reading contributed to that.

A Vein of Deceit by Susanna Gregory, which featured an impressive string of deaths and lies related to college finances and something going on in Suffolk.

Crypt, with lots of detail about recent findings about medieval burials, and about what ancient DNA can now tell about how the people lived and died. And also about how DNA has shed a lot more light on the plague and syphilis.

Currently reading
Started reading The Hollow Crown by Dan Jones

Reading next
I'm waiting for a library reservation and in the meantime I've picked up something from my shelves to read on the train today.

Stove

For the last 3 decades I've been cooking on cheap stoves that is 1/2 a step up from the cheapest crap a slum landlord could buy.  We had one at Bryant St, we have one at Henry St and I have one in Ukiah.  They are so cheap that the stovetops never stay flat.  They sag, so the fluid in the pan drains off to one side and the food cooks unevenly. No, it isn't possible to level up the stove, the stove -is- level, it is just the burners that aren't. One side of the pan burns, the other doesn't cook. The ovens have hot and cold spots, the insulation around the ovens is famous for disintegrating over time so the stoves leak heat into the kitchen wasting energy and cooking even more unevenly as time goes by.
I've been seriously lusting after a new, good quality stove for at least a decade.  On and off over the last 3 years I've been doing research on stoves. Now that the house has a new roof, I'm getting a new stove.  Nothing fancy, rather the opposite.  It is the plainest 36 inch professional range I could buy.  No computer, just knobs to turn. Not even a clock.  It will work on propane and it will work when the power is out.  With 6 burners, the range top is big enough to put two big canning kettles on without having to negotiate for space, which cannot be said of my current 30 inch stove. And it is made in USA. It is a Blue Star stove.  I got a quote today and will probably order it tomorrow.
I was amused.  Donald and I went to a store in Santa Rosa to see the stove and talk to a salesman about it.  Now Donald is thinking of replacing the stove at Henry St which has all of the issues I'm struggling with here in Ukiah.  He will need the 30" electric version as there is no room for a bigger stove.

More on Smokey

I am unpopular with Smokey.

I took her to the vet today for an x-ray - the appointment was for 09:00, meaning I had to get up at a sparrow’s fart. She didn’t like being put in the carrier.

They were very careful to explain to me that it involved a general anaesthetic and they could not guarantee that Smokey would survive. I said I understood and that at her age (she’s 19) I wouldn’t expect a heroic revival if anything happened.

As you can imagine, I have been on tenterhooks all day.

I got a call at quarter to four to tell me that she was ready to be picked up.

It turned out that the only thing the x-ray showed was swollen lymph nodes. So we are giving her at least a month’s rest from being dragged to the vet, and may then repeat her bloods. Someone on FB asked me if they have checked for pancreatitis, and yes, they have. They are as sure as they can be that it’s not that.

When I got her home, I opened her carrier and she ran up the stairs as if the hounds of hell were at her little furry heels. Poor cat!

Poor me, too. The doors to the poor house gape ever wider. X-raying a cat is not a cheap hobby. Neither are taxi fares x four. I may have to live on cheap biscuits and porridge.
