Reconsidering NaNoWriMo
Oct. 13th, 2008 05:45 pmLast year, when I wrote 'False Colors' during November's NaNo, I finished with a couple of days to spare. So I started writing 'The Boys of summer'. This year, I meant to finish Boys of Summer in November. The trouble is that when I re-read my first chapter I now think it's terrible, and that perhaps writing so fast = writing badly. I've given it a thorough pruning today, but it was like slogging through mud.
OTOH, 'Wages of Sin' was like slogging through mud the first week too. Is it just that stage of the writing process? Is it genuinely bad? Would it be better if I wrote the rest of it at a pace of 1050(minimum) words a day, which I know I can sustain with a reasonable result? Or is it better to get it done fast and do more editing later?
I'm inclined to think that as long as the False Colors edits haven't landed on my doorstep, I might as well use the rest of October to make a start on Boys of Summer, at a pace where I know I can do reasonably good work, reasonably fast. I don't like the feeling of having to struggle with a really *really* terrible first draft, and I think I can minimize that by going slightly slower and thinking as I go along.
On other news I've discovered the fabulous delights of Last.fm, the internet radio station. It's so cool! You can put in all your favourite bands and they will make a personal station just for you which plays only the music you like. I have fairly eclectic tastes - Placebo, Bowie, Boccerini, Purcell, Hawkwind, The Mediaeval Baebes, Linkin Park, Steeleye Span, Ministry of Sound, Paul Oakenfold, Roxy Music etc, so it's just amazing to be able to put on a radio station that plays all of them together. And for each band or artist they suggest others who are like them, so it's really easy to come across things you've never heard before but might enjoy.
And it's all free! Result!
