Oct. 17th, 2008 04:48 pmAmount of Boys of Summer written today = 0%
Amount of 'Death of a Pirate King' by Josh Lanyon read today = 100%
These two things are not unrelated ;)
I came home from swimming this morning to find my print copy of Death of a Pirate King had arrived from Amazon, and I thought 'I'll just check out the first page before I get down to some work.' LOL! Needless to say, here I am, four hours later, having done nothing but read the book like someone downing real ale in one.
I remember being overjoyed when I read the first Adrien English novel, because it gave me that heady feeling that I had found a new author whose work I would always love. That doesn't happen to me often these days - the last time was Patrick O'Brien, about three years ago, but before that it had been almost ten years since I found an author who made me want to leap for joy.
I'm glad to say that 'Death of a Pirate King' gives me the same feeling all over again. This isn't a review - I've been doing a lot of those recently and I'm tired of having to be all serious and balanced about things ;) This is just a rave. So I can say Eee, I love the way that it hits the ground running. (For those interested in first sentence/paragraph technique, first sentence on its own = nothing special, but whole first paragraph = brilliant, gripping and funny.) The language is still top notch. Even better than before, I think, though I need to go back and savour it - I read it too fast to properly appreciate it. And I did that because there was never a single place where it flagged in interest.
The whole Adrien/Guy/Jake thing was brilliant and played out pretty much in the way I was hoping. Though, there was a moment there that I was wholeheartedly rooting for Adrien/Jake/Paul as a threesome. I'm not normally a pirate fan, but when he's played by a plummy Brit with arrogance and charm, I could be persuaded.
Squee for the Pirates of the Caribbean shoutout (At Wits End! Huzzah!). And wasn't someone saying Adrien ought to get a cat? LOL! How happy they must be right now ;)
Two thumbs way up, but I think I need to read it again now, slower.
