There's also the lesser known male version: The Gary-Stu or Marty-Stu (there's not so much consensus on what he's called, which doesn't help).
It is a useful term, when applied in the right context. Outside of that, though, it's pretty nebulous and therefore not helpful - which is probably why some people want to retire the idea. It would be more helpful to use the term in the original sense than not use it all ever again, but that's just my view on it.
