Jan. 8th, 2009 06:08 pmI have the dumb! At about three o'clock today there was a snapping noise and all the electricity in the house went off. Because it was *all* the electrics, I thought it was a power cut. I did go into the garage to check the fuses, but they all were 'on' so I assumed there was nothing for it but to wait until the power came back on. So I sat and read until it got dark, and then I lit a candle and read some more. About 5pm I thought 'this is taking a long time', and phoned my husband, who said 'you did check the main circuit breaker, didn't you?' And of course I hadn't. It was off. I switched it back to 'on' and hey presto light all over the house. *Sigh*, next time I'm going to have to check that first!
I went to see the film 'Inkheart' during the holidays and really quite enjoyed it. Very uplifting for all those people whose business is with words, I think. So I've been reading the books ever since. I actually think I like the film better. The books have a tendency to say everything at least three times and often with exclamation marks and people saying "Oh goodness!" Part of the stiltedness of the language may be due to the books being translated from German, but that can hardly account for the way they keep repeating themselves. It's a great idea, being able to read characters out of books, and then read yourself into books and have adventures there, but I don't think the wonder of it is fully realized, probably because she tries so hard and keeps trying so hard to convince the reader how wonderful and scary it is. It feels very wrong to prefer the film to the book though!

Almost finished ruining Tony's day. Tomorrow (if the UPS man doesn't arrive with my edits on 'False Colors'), I will torment Darren for a bit instead :)
